“(Ray Charles Ives) has you scrambling for old Shaft reruns while simultaneously pouring your heart out to the nearest heart that will listen...Their new album Clandestine Pedestrian is what funk would be if it had a bleeding heart and open mind.” – Rob DeWalt
Instrumental groove duo Ray C. Ives tirelessly strives to provide a joyride. It's music you can't help but move to: tap your foot, shake your hips, bounce with abandon. Featuring Feathericci (Paul G.) and Diplomat (B. Mayhall), Ray Charles Ives makes music with the old style (drums, electric bass, fender rhodes, and voice), contrasting that with newer ones (samplers and drum machines). Ray C. Ives uses live loops as the basis for their sound which makes the music very process oriented. The listener becomes accustomed to the sound and feel of that particular sound or melody, so that when another layer is added it is much more dramatic. The foundation is a funky groove with beautiful, dreamy chords dancing around, through and with it. And this magnificent combination either drifts you into a contemplative state, or forces you to move your body.
Feathericci and Diplomat studied music together at the College of Santa Fe. Once meeting, they began to perform with varying groups, in a multitude of styles: jazz, rap, rock, pop . Now, following a style all their own, they compose simple, lyrical masterpieces and infuse them with raw energy. Their goal is for an energetic experience; an experience where they are truly present, listening and playing off of each other. Their form of improvisation is one where they move within the structure they created, playing with the dynamics, the texture, and the tone. One can get a sense of what they are about by just considering their name, a combination of R and B artist, Ray Charles, and the experimental composer, Charles Ives.
You listen to Ray Charles Ives and it's like you are hearing a song you know, though you've never heard it before. Their music is like a river: always changing; always staying the same. Bubbling electronic sounds flow together, supported by funky bass lines and complicated drum sequences. A musical force to be reckoned with.
Ray Charles Ives' debut recording, clandestine pedestrian , is a five-song studio EP.
