The Uninvited Guests' main goal is to be involved in the performance at all times. Far from call and response, the music is made up of listening and responding, where each artist plays a part of an ever changing whole. The songs move in waves: the music is at first almost familiar, then rises to a frenzied peak, descends slowly into a quiet valley, only to be tossed upwards again into a world of oddly compiled sounds and rhythms. To perform as a “guest” one must become an active participant working with and around the sounds of their fellow performers, most of whom have never performed together before. Each artist is hi-lited, choosing the path the group will take, though the result is always unknown. To listen to the “guests” you must be prepared to shed any preconceived notions of what music is. Passivity is not allowed.

The Uninvited Guests began as a trio project with Carlos Santistevan, (a self-taught bassist whose style has moved from punk rock to improvisation), Steve Powell (guitar) and Tom Brejcha (horns). Since their first performance, various musicians have been asked to fill in as “invited guests.” The trio became a revolving musical project with Carlos as the one static member. Before long, bands were being curated for specific shows, the artists performing with little or no rehearsal. The Uninvited Guests is a place where practiced artists and those newly emerging into the world of experimental music can come to hone their technical skills, their ability to freely improvise, and to expand their artistic mind and heart.

To date, over 20 musicians have been guests and the group has varied from trios to septets. The sound is at times acoustic, at times electronic and everywhere in between. The music on this CD represents a chronological documentation of The Uninvited Guests live performances. Each track documents the lone materialization of a particular lineup. All performances were in Santa Fe, NM.
