DERAIL was formed June 2003 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Their pieces are a mix of composition and reeform improvisation, derived from psychedelic, rock, noise, and experimental backgrounds. DERAIL uses elements from each of these genres to create textured soundscapes.
Though DERAIL may be metal or punk influenced, their sound can’t be placed in either category. You might say they can’t be placed in any category. They are dark and mysterious, like liquid fire, with individual pieces melting into one another. At times, ambient guitar and electronic movements flow above a simple bass line and delicate percussions. On other pieces, the vocals step up, with the heartbeat-rhythm of the bass and the masterful, complex drum beat driving it all forward. In track three, the mood is made melancholy by the addition of a delicate trumpet line, which heightens the tension built up by the guitar and drums.
This album of psychedelic noise rock is taken from a live performance at the High Mayhem 2004 Emerging Arts Festival. The three members of DERAIL are Roland Ostheim (guitar, voice, and Rhodes keyboard), Adam Fried (bass), and Michael Smith (percussion, keyboard, and electronics). Their main goal during a performance is to stay connected with one another. Their individual styles intertwine and complement each other in a way that can only be accomplished through truly listening to each other while performing, staying in the moment but also pulling each artist outside of the music he is creating in order to be at one with the whole. While exposing themselves, their combined efforts bring the listener to an almost pained introspection.
